UnitedHealth Group beats Q2 forecasts, raises 2026 earnings outlook

UnitedHealth Group reported second‑quarter 2026 results that far exceeded analyst expectations. Adjusted earnings were $6.38 per share, versus the $4.91 consensus, and net profit reached $5.48 billion on revenue of $112 billion. The medical loss ratio fell to 86.7%, better than the projected 88.4%, reflecting improved cost control across its insurance and Optum segments.

On the strength of the results, the company lifted its full‑year 2026 adjusted EPS guidance to a range of $19.50‑$20, up from a prior low end of $18.25. CEO Stephen Hemsley and CFO Wayne DeVeydt attributed the beat to product‑design changes, tighter claims management and pricing discipline. UnitedHealth’s shares jumped roughly 6‑7% in pre‑market trading.

Separately, analysts noted that while the earnings beat signals a turnaround, medical costs for UnitedHealthcare’s employer clients rose 11%, highlighting ongoing pressure on businesses that provide health coverage.
