UnitedHealthcare and Humana to cut Medicare Advantage plans for 2027

UnitedHealthcare and Humana, the two largest Medicare Advantage insurers, are discontinuing plans that cover approximately 990,000 Americans in 2027. The decision is driven by rising medical expenses and pressure to increase profitability.

UnitedHealthcare confirmed that roughly 390,000 members will be affected, with the company focusing reductions on Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans while prioritizing Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Special Needs Plans (SNPs). Humana is discontinuing plans for about 600,000 members, representing roughly 8% of its Medicare Advantage enrollment. Humana stated it is targeting lower-performing plans rather than making widespread reductions.

In addition to plan closures, insurers are scaling back certain benefits. Reports indicate that UnitedHealthcare’s dental benefit reductions have affected nearly 70% of its members. Affected seniors must review coverage options before the December 7 enrollment deadline to secure healthcare for 2027.
