Unitree Robotics sees volatile debut following landmark humanoid robot IPO

Unitree Robotics, a Chinese humanoid robot startup, has made a significant impact on the market following its debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's STAR Market. As the first humanoid robot company to list on the mainland, its IPO has become a symbol of China's rapid growth in the physical AI and robotics sectors, driven by national industrial policies.

The company experienced extreme market volatility. After opening at 1,100 yuan per share—a 629% increase from its 150.80 yuan issue price—its market value briefly reached 444.9 billion yuan. However, the surge was short-lived; by early September, the stock price had dropped significantly, losing over 220 billion yuan in market value.

Analysts point to a gap between the company's high valuation and its financial fundamentals. While Unitree reported strong revenue growth in 2025, its growth rate slowed in the first half of 2026, and its price-to-earnings ratio remained much higher than the industry average. Additionally, a large portion of its humanoid robot revenue (73.6%) is derived from research and education sectors, raising questions about its ability to expand into broader commercial and industrial markets.
