Unitree Robotics shares surge 460% following historic Shanghai IPO debut

Unitree Robotics, a Chinese manufacturer of humanoid and quadruped robots, made a historic debut on the Shanghai STAR Market on August 19, 2026. The company's shares experienced extreme volatility, surging as much as 629% intraday before closing with a 460% gain at 845 yuan. This performance brought Unitree's market capitalization to approximately 50 billion USD, following an IPO that raised roughly 904 million USD. The offering saw massive retail demand, with subscriptions exceeding the available shares by more than 8,000 times.

Alongside the market debut, Unitree unveiled 'Superman,' a new humanoid robot capable of sprinting at 12.66 meters per second. CEO Wang Xingxing noted that while the industry is growing, the 'ChatGPT moment' for robotics—where machines can execute complex tasks via natural language—may be two to ten years away.

The surge occurs amid geopolitical tensions, as the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has announced bans on certain Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots, citing national security and cybersecurity concerns. Despite these barriers, the IPO highlights intense investor interest in the embodied AI sector.
