Univé restricts insurance for several new car brands in the Netherlands

The Dutch insurance provider Univé has raised concerns regarding the rapid influx of new automotive brands in the Netherlands, noting that repair infrastructure is not keeping pace with market entry. While sixteen new brands have entered the Dutch market over the last five years—representing 2.4% of new registrations—many lack the necessary support networks.

Univé reports that certain brands, particularly several Chinese manufacturers, face challenges regarding spare parts availability, technical repair instructions, and specialized repair networks. This can lead to extended wait times for vehicle repairs and unexpectedly high costs for consumers. Due to these uncertainties, Univé has implemented restrictions on insurance coverage for several brands.

Specifically, models from brands such as Changan, Hongqi, Jaecoo, Leapmotor, MHero, Omoda, and Voyah are excluded from insurance entirely at Univé. Other brands, including Dongfeng, Firefly, Nio, and Zeekr, are only eligible for mandatory third-party liability (WA) insurance. Additionally, brands like Lucid, KGM, and Vinfast face limited or no coverage options. Despite the growing consumer openness toward Chinese vehicles, research shows that only 12% of drivers investigate parts availability before purchasing.
