Univé restricts insurance for several new car brands in the Netherlands
Dutch insurer Univé has restricted insurance coverage for several new automotive brands, primarily those from China, due to logistical challenges in the after-sales market. The company has suspended comprehensive (AC) insurance for many brands, including Hongqi, Changan, Voyah, KGM, Leapmotor, VinFast, Jaecoo, MHero, and Omoda.
For five specific brands—Dongfeng, Lucid, Firefly, Nio, and Zeekr—the insurer will only offer third-party liability (OC) coverage. Univé stated that these restrictions are not a reflection of vehicle quality or safety, but rather a response to difficulties regarding spare parts availability, lack of technical documentation, and insufficient repair networks. These factors lead to prolonged repair times and unpredictable costs.
Univé noted that while some newer brands like BYD, Tesla, and Lynk & Co have established adequate infrastructure, others have not kept pace with sales growth. The insurer indicated that restrictions could be lifted if manufacturers expand their technical support and parts supply chains.
