Univasf project uses sports to support youth with autism
The Federal University of the São Francisco Valley (Univasf) is conducting a research and extension project in Petrolina, Pernambuco, designed to support children and adolescents with level 1 autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Known as 'Vem para o Jogo', the initiative has operated for over two years as a free program open to the community. The project utilizes sports to improve motor coordination, physical health, and essential social skills such as teamwork, logical reasoning, and social interaction.
Project lead Professor Fernando de Aguiar notes that sports serve as a simulation of real-life social environments, helping participants develop the ability to follow rules, respect others, and manage social challenges and frustrations.
