Universal Beach Hotels Launches MedGardens Mediterranean Restoration

Universal Beach Hotels, a family‑run hotel group operating on the Balearic Islands, has integrated Mediterranean marine conservation into its ESG strategy. Through partnership with the Cleanwave Foundation's MedGardens project, the chain supports restoration of Posidonia oceanica meadows and algal forests at sites such as Cala Reina (Sant Elm) and Portocolom.

The initiative combines scientific monitoring, development of replanting techniques, and guides for coastal restoration. Board member Mirtha Erhart‑Zimmerli emphasised that the sea is essential to Mallorca’s identity and tourism, so protecting it is both an ecological duty and an investment in the destination’s future.

Recent results include a published method for Posidonia replanting, volunteer beach clean‑ups involving about 150 participants who removed 115 kg of waste, and operational improvements that cut the hotels’ CO₂ footprint by 6.2 % per stay, saved four million litres of water, and recycled over 9 200 L of used oil into biodiesel.
