Universal Church faces election abuse allegations over spiritual campaign

The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God has launched a 52-day spiritual mobilization known as the ‘Nehemiah Challenge,’ which is scheduled to conclude on October 4, the date of the first round of the 2026 elections. The campaign involves daily tasks for followers via a dedicated app, covering themes such as ‘guardians of the family,’ ‘rulers against the people,’ and being ‘under the yoke of tyrants.’

Bishop Alessandro Paschoall, who leads the Arimateia project focused on political awareness, is a key figure in the mobilization. The campaign’s themes have drawn attention for their political undertones, including criticisms of pandemic-era restrictions and discussions regarding ‘fake news.’

In response, the Associação Movimento Brasil Laico has filed a complaint with the Electoral Public Ministry. The complaint alleges abuse of economic, political, and religious power, suggesting the church may be using its structure to favor specific candidates, including bishops and pastors running for office. The legal challenge also raises concerns regarding the potential use of congregants' personal data for electoral purposes and the use of prohibited sources for campaigning.
