Universal Funeral Home suffers major power outage in Hong Kong

The Universal Funeral Home in Hung Hom experienced a major power failure on August 9, affecting lighting, air conditioning, ventilation, and elevators. The outage occurred during a period of intense heat, causing smoke to fill corridors and leaving some funeral halls without cooling. While the facility's mortuary refrigeration remained functional, some families had to relocate services to nearby funeral homes due to high temperatures in the halls.

The operator, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, stated that the failure was caused by a fault in the busbar riser and fuses within the second-floor electrical room. While lighting and some ventilation have been restored, central air conditioning on the fourth and fifth floors remains out of service. The facility is currently offering limited services while repairs continue.

Industry professionals have noted that the facility, which dates back to 1978, suffers from aging infrastructure. They pointed out that because the site is government-owned and operated under a five-year contract, the current operator may face challenges in justifying the massive capital expenditure required for a complete electrical system overhaul.
