Universal Health Services completes $835M Talkspace acquisition

Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) has completed its $835 million acquisition of Talkspace, Inc., a leading virtual behavioral health platform. The deal closed following regulatory approvals and aims to create an integrated continuum of mental healthcare services.

The acquisition combines UHS’s extensive network of physical facilities—including hospitals, inpatient units, and outpatient locations—with Talkspace’s virtual care capabilities. This integration is intended to facilitate seamless transitions between different levels of care, ranging from virtual counseling and psychiatry to intensive inpatient treatment and crisis intervention.

UHS, a major U.S. healthcare provider, expects the addition of Talkspace’s network of approximately 6,000 licensed providers to help address staffing challenges and labor shortages that have previously impacted the growth of its behavioral health segment. The expanded capacity is expected to support UHS in meeting its patient day growth targets and provide new referral streams between virtual and brick-and-mortar services.
