Universal Merchant Bank receives approval for virtual asset banking in Ghana
Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) has become the first bank in Ghana to receive joint approval from the Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission to offer virtual accounts to businesses in the virtual asset sector. This authorization allows UMB to provide regulated banking channels for companies involved in crypto and blockchain-linked activities, a group that has historically faced difficulties accessing mainstream banking due to compliance and anti-money laundering concerns.
The move is part of a broader effort by Ghanaian regulators to strengthen the architecture for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) and integrate digital finance into the formal economy. While the approval marks a milestone, specific details regarding eligibility criteria, capital thresholds, and the exact types of qualifying businesses have not yet been disclosed by the bank.
As the sector develops, regulators have emphasized the need for collaboration between financial institutions and authorities to ensure innovation occurs within a stable and controlled environment.
