Universal Modder enables Claude AI to create autonomous PC game mods
The open-source project Universal Modder has introduced a tool that enables the AI assistant Claude to autonomously create complete mods for PC games. By connecting the assistant to reverse engineering capabilities, the system can analyze game files, generate code, and produce visual and audio elements such as textures, 2D sprites, and 3D models using the fal API.
The tool automates the entire workflow, including identifying the game engine, adapting file structures, compiling packages, and running the executable to validate the modification. It can even run games in the background and record video to detect errors without manual user intervention.
In practical tests, the tool added new enemies, bosses, and weapons to Terraria, and implemented a futuristic civilization with autonomous taxis and drones in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. The developers have specified that the tool is intended for single-player, offline games within a user's personal library. It is explicitly designed to avoid creating multiplayer cheats, bypassing anti-cheat systems, or circumventing piracy protections.
