Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs partner on AI music platform

Universal Music Group (UMG) and ElevenLabs have entered into a multi-year strategic collaboration and licensing agreement to develop a new AI-powered music creation platform. The partnership aims to foster responsible AI innovation by focusing on licensed content and artist authorization rather than the unrestricted use of copyrighted material.

The upcoming platform will allow fans to engage in co-creation through remixes, mashups, and reinterpretations of existing tracks using music from UMG’s catalog. A key component of the agreement is that artists and songwriters can voluntarily choose whether to authorize the use of their works, ensuring they can participate in the economic value generated by the technology.

This move is part of UMG’s broader strategy to integrate generative AI through partnerships with various technology firms, including previous collaborations with Udio, Spotify, and Nvidia. The new platform will be distinct from ElevenLabs’ existing products, such as its Music API and ElevenMusic application.
