Universal Music Group held preliminary buyout talks with private equity firms

Universal Music Group engaged in exploratory discussions earlier this year regarding a potential take-private transaction. According to reports from Bloomberg, the Amsterdam-listed music giant held preliminary talks with several major private equity firms, including Apollo Global Management, TPG, and Blackstone.

Despite these discussions, no formal sale process has been launched, and the talks did not progress to a concrete offer. The company’s board was reportedly informed of these exchanges, though no strategic direction toward a buyout has been validated.

The potential interest in a buyout follows a period of market pressure. Universal’s shares have declined significantly in 2026, trading below their 2021 listing price. This valuation pressure stems from slowing streaming growth in developed markets and investor concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on music royalties and distribution.

Previously, shareholder Bill Ackman proposed a €56 billion takeover to relocate the company's listing to the United States, an approach Universal rejected. The Bolloré family, which controls over 30% of the company through direct holdings and Vivendi, has publicly questioned the current market valuation. Tencent also holds a stake of more than 11%.
