Universal Music Group partners with Hook for licensed AI music remixing
Universal Music Group (UMG) has entered a licensing partnership with Hook, an AI-powered music remixing and social media app. The agreement allows fans to create remixes, mashups, and video content using UMG’s official recordings, including tracks from labels such as Republic Records, Capitol Records, Mavin, and Virgin Music Group.
Unlike generative AI platforms that create entirely new tracks, Hook provides tools for users to remix existing, fully licensed music. The platform enables users to share their creations across major social media networks, including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and SoundCloud.
Under the terms of the deal, UMG artists and rights-holders maintain control over which songs are available for use and how they are shared. The partnership is designed to ensure that artists and rights-holders receive compensation whenever fans create and share user-generated content using their music. Hook, which recently raised $10 million in Series A funding led by Khosla Ventures, already holds licensing agreements with other entities such as Downtown Music Group, Too Lost, Primary Wave, and Avex.
