Universal Orlando Resort evolves through franchise expansions and horror attractions

Universal Orlando Resort has undergone significant transformations since its opening in 1990, evolving through the replacement of classic attractions with modern, franchise-based experiences.

One of the most notable changes was the 2012 closure of the JAWS attraction. The ride, which featured a mechanical shark and practical effects, was demolished to make way for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley, which opened in 2014. This shift moved the park toward highly immersive environments based on major film franchises.

The resort continues to leverage horror and cinematic history through various themed experiences. Upcoming attractions like Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment in the Dark Universe area will feature classic creatures such as Dracula, the Wolf Man, and the Mummy. Other offerings, such as the Horror Make-Up Show, focus on the technical artistry of filmmaking, demonstrating how prosthetics and special effects are used to create cinematic terror.
