Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights draws thrill‑seekers with scares and tips

Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) is Universal Orlando’s annual Halloween event featuring multiple haunted houses, outdoor scare zones, themed food, merchandise and special tours. The attraction, which began as Fright Nights in Hollywood and moved to Florida in 1991, has grown into a premier Halloween spectacle.

Visitors who are nervous can plan their night by starting with less intense houses, staying with a group, and using the “Deathly Afraid Necklace” that signals scare actors to avoid the wearer. Breaks are encouraged, and guests can escape the action at the Tribute Store, enjoy themed snacks, or watch shows. Daytime tours such as the Unmasking the Horror Tour let guests see sets and props without darkness.

The event’s history includes creators Julie Zimmerman and John Paul Geurts, an original Mardi‑Gras theme, early use of slime from Nickelodeon, and the debut of the “Rat Lady” character. Over 35 years, HHN has become a major cultural draw for thrill‑seekers at Universal Studios Florida.
