Universal Pictures advances live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2

Universal Pictures is moving forward with the live-action sequel to ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’, which is currently scheduled for release on June 11, 2027. The film will adapt the plot of the 2014 animated sequel, focusing on Hiccup discovering the truth about his mother, Valka, and facing a new antagonist named Drago.

Mason Thames will reprise his role as Hiccup, with Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, and Julian Dennison returning to the cast. Cate Blanchett will join the live-action ensemble as Valka, a role she previously voiced in the animated series. New additions to the cast include Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Drago and Phil Dunster as Eret.

Lead actor Mason Thames expressed high confidence in the production, stating that the team has taken the foundation of the first film and brought it to a new level in terms of worldbuilding and maturity. The project is written, directed, and executive produced by Dean DeBlois, who also helmed the original animated trilogy.
