Universal Pictures' Van Helsing franchise attempt failed

In 2004, Universal Pictures attempted to launch a new cinematic universe centered on classic horror monsters using Hugh Jackman as the lead. The film, Van Helsing, directed by Stephen Sommers, reimagined Bram Stoker’s vampire hunter as an action hero working for a secret organization tied to the Church.

Despite a high-spectacle approach featuring digital effects and action sequences designed to attract younger audiences, the film failed to establish a lasting franchise. While it earned approximately $300 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $160 to $170 million, the returns were insufficient to justify sequels after accounting for distribution and promotion costs.

The project also faced intense competition from other major 2004 blockbusters, including Spider-Man 2, Shrek 2, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Incredibles.
