Universal, Sony and Warner Push Rules to Bar AI‑Created Songs from Music Charts

Universal Music Group, Sony Music and Warner Music Group have jointly proposed new eligibility rules for major music charts. The draft, released on July 31, 2026, would exclude recordings in which generative artificial intelligence produced the majority of the musical content unless the work shows a substantial human contribution. The proposal also requires that any AI tools used be properly licensed, that the data used to train the models be rights‑cleared, and that the recordings comply with copyright, neighboring‑right and personality‑right laws. Labels insist that AI‑generated tracks must be clearly labeled and that streaming or chart metrics show no evidence of manipulation.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has voiced support for the initiative, but no chart‑compiling organization has committed to adopting the criteria. The proposal expands on earlier voluntary labeling programs introduced by IFPI, RIAA and other industry groups, but it is not yet a binding regulation.

If implemented, the rules could reshape how AI‑assisted music is reported and promoted, distinguishing fully AI‑generated releases from those that use AI as a creative aid.
