Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua launches biotech project to boost sustainable sotol production in Chihuahua

The Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH) is funding a research project led by Dr. María Antonia Flores Córdova to improve the sustainable cultivation of sotol (Dasylirion leiophyllum) in the state of Chihuahua. The initiative, part of the “Más Ciencia, Más Investigación, Más UACH 2026” call, uses plant biotechnology techniques such as biotization—introducing beneficial microorganisms early in growth—and clonal multiplication to increase seedling survival and reduce dependence on wild‑harvested plants.

The project will evaluate growth indicators like biomass, antioxidant activity, and chlorophyll content in laboratory and greenhouse settings. Results are intended to become technical protocols that can be transferred to local producers, helping them adopt more efficient, environmentally friendly cultivation methods and easing pressure on natural sotol populations. Sotol is the raw material for a protected‑origin spirit that accounts for 80‑90% of national production, making the research economically significant for the region.
