Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua launches home composting campaign

The Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH), through its Faculty of Zootecnia y Ecología, is encouraging residents of Chihuahua city to produce household compost. Professor David Santillán Estrada explains that organic kitchen waste—fruit and vegetable scraps—can be combined with dry leaves or cardboard in a ventilated container, kept moderately moist and turned periodically to create nutrient‑rich fertilizer for gardens and urban farms.

A 2022 UACH study found that each city inhabitant generates about 0.78 kg of solid waste daily, with roughly 48.6 % being organic. By diverting this material to compost, the program aims to lower landfill use, reduce methane emissions, replace chemical fertilizers and promote a circular‑economy mindset in the community.
