Mexico school return drives billions in economic impact and high university enrollment
The 2026-2027 academic cycle has commenced across various Mexican regions, driving significant economic activity and large-scale student enrollments.
In the State of Mexico, the return to classes is expected to generate an economic impact of 15 billion pesos, with approximately 6.35 billion pesos attributed to the Toluca Valley. Similarly, in Mexico City, Coparmex CDMX estimates a 6.14 billion peso windfall, primarily benefiting micro and small businesses.
Major universities are reporting high enrollment numbers. The Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas (UAZ) began the semester with over 40,000 students, while the Universidad de Sonora (Unison) welcomed more than 40,000 students and staff, with traffic operations implemented to ensure safety. The Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (UACH) reported approximately 29,000 students, and BUAP in Puebla saw over 30,000 new students enter its campuses. Additionally, the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa (UAS) has been conducting facility inspections and staff meetings to prepare for the August 24 start date.
In Chihuahua, the municipal government is advancing the ‘Mi Beca Chihuahua’ program, providing economic support to students through various modalities, including competitiveness and academic excellence grants.
