Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí faces funding and mental health challenges

The Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP) is addressing several institutional developments and challenges. The University's Directing Council has approved a proposal to award Dr. Rosaura Ruiz Gutiérrez the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa.

Separately, Rector Alejandro Zermeño Guerra reported significant financial pressure on the university due to legal injunctions. Between 110 and 120 amparos were filed last year, primarily by undergraduate students seeking free higher education. Zermeño noted that while the 2019 constitutional reform mandates free public higher education, the federal government has not provided the necessary resources to compensate for the loss of tuition revenue, describing it as a “strong blow to the economy of the institutions.”

Regarding student welfare, the Rector addressed the university's capacity to manage mental health. While UASLP can detect risks such as depression or self-harm during admission and throughout university life, the institution cannot compel individuals to receive treatment against their will. The Faculty of Psychology has provided over 11,000 services to the university community so far this year, with Zermeño emphasizing that mental health prevention is a shared responsibility between the institution and families.
