Universidad Católica San Pablo unveils life-size Miguel Grau sculpture
The Universidad Católica San Pablo (UCSP) in Arequipa has presented a hyper-realistic, full-body, life-size three-dimensional recreation of Admiral Miguel Grau Seminario (1834-1879). Developed by the university's Department of Humanities, the project involved approximately one year of historical research and artistic work.
Because skeletal studies were unavailable due to the circumstances of Grau's death during the Battle of Angamos, the team relied on period photographs, contemporary testimonies, and documentary evidence. The sculpture depicts Grau with his documented physical characteristics, including a height of approximately 1.67 meters, a robust build, and long sideburns typical of the era. The recreation utilized 3D modeling, contemporary sculpture techniques, and medical-grade silicone to ensure precision.
The exhibition is currently hosted at the San Lázaro campus and will remain open to the public until October 28. Following the exhibition, university authorities plan to move the sculpture to museums and schools to help younger generations connect with the historical figure's human dimension and civic legacy.
