Universidad Central de Venezuela suspends regular classes until September 1 after June earthquakes
The University Council of Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) voted to suspend all regular academic activities through September 1, 2026, following the twin earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. The decision, announced via the university’s Viva la UCV social‑media channel by council member Madeleine Mujica, also keeps administrative functions operating as each department decides. The council approved that volunteer work at the university’s FCU‑UCV collection center count as community service hours, urged faculties to launch service projects related to the disaster, and will permanently offer courses in first aid and risk prevention. Additionally, UCV’s Faculty of Medicine partnered with the UMIA medical management platform to provide remote assistance to earthquake victims and their families.
The university’s collection center, set up at the FCU‑UCV plaza, has become one of the country’s largest aid hubs, handling donations, medical supplies and coordinating with other universities, civil societies and companies across Venezuela. Over 15,000 people have benefited and about 500 volunteers are engaged in sorting and distributing aid to shelters and affected areas.
