Universidad de Chile challenges Azul Azul over use of name and symbols
The Universidad de Chile has initiated a formal review of its relationship with Azul Azul S.A., the concessionaire that manages the university's football club. Following a legal report, the university's pro-rector, Dorotea López, stated that there have been “grave and repeated breaches” of the 2008 agreement.
López noted that the university's name and symbols have been affected by behaviors that “depart from our values and principles,” making the current terms of use “unacceptable.” The university administration argues that the nearly 20-year-old contract no longer addresses the complexities of modern sports corporations.
While the university intends to exercise all legal actions available under the agreement, there are calls for transparency and new negotiations. Former player Patricio Mardones commented on the situation, suggesting that while the university must protect its prestige and order its affairs, losing the club's symbols would be “a tragedy.” The university is proposing a new agreement that would grant the academic institution more influence over decision-making processes.
