Universidad de Chile signs Uruguayan defender Gauthier on loan

Universidad de Chile announced the arrival of 22‑year‑old Uruguayan centre‑back Valentín Gauthier on a loan with an option to buy from Mexico's Club León. The defender is expected to land in Santiago this weekend, undergo medical examinations and sign his contract at the Centro Deportivo Azul. Coach Fernando Gago highlighted Gauthier’s physical presence, aerial ability and maturity as key attributes to strengthen a defence that has been limited by a tight budget. The signing follows a similar loan deal for winger Gonzalo Reyna and comes as the club works to fill three mid‑season slots.

In parallel, former player Matías Zaldivia began training with the squad during the inter‑season, participating in a light session before resuming his rehabilitation. The club hopes he can be eligible for the first match of the second round on 26 July against Audax Italiano. Both moves are part of Gago’s plan to keep the team competitive despite financial constraints.
