Universidad de La Laguna commemorates Bartolomé García Lorenzo

The Universidad de La Laguna (ULL) has inaugurated a documentary exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Bartolomé García Lorenzo. A 21-year-old student, García Lorenzo was killed by police forces, an event that caused widespread social unrest, strikes, and protests during Spain's transition to democracy.

Organized by the Archivo de la Transición Democrática en Canarias (ATDC), the exhibition, titled “Bartolomé García Lorenzo. 1976-2026: 50 años de un asesinato policial,” will run until October 30. The collection includes books, newspapers, and documents regarding this case and other instances of police repression during the Transition period.

The exhibition aims to serve as both an act of memory and a historical research exercise. It seeks to reconstruct the events to understand the political tensions of the era, when many institutional and police structures from the dictatorship remained in operation following the death of Francisco Franco.
