Universidad de la República graduates first doctors trained in Uruguay's interior

The Universidad de la República (Udelar) has celebrated a milestone in its decentralization process with the graduation of the first group of medical doctors to complete their entire studies in the interior of Uruguay. The ceremony, held on July 30 at the Hospital Escuela del Litoral “Galán y Rocha” in Paysandú, recognized 15 to 16 graduates who completed their training through the Centro Universitario Regional Litoral Norte, spanning the cities of Salto and Paysandú.

This achievement allows students from the northern coastal region to pursue medical degrees without relocating to Montevideo, enabling them to maintain local community and family ties. University officials noted that the consolidation of the full medical curriculum in the region represents a significant advancement in educational access.

In addition to the academic milestone, the expansion of the university has spurred local development. Udelar is currently constructing a new educational center on land provided by the local municipality, which will include administrative offices, research facilities, and specialized teaching spaces for medicine and other disciplines.
