Universidad de las Américas identifies bacteria on mobile devices

Microbiology laboratory researchers at the Universidad de las Américas (UDLA) conducted an analysis of a mobile phone to observe accumulated microorganisms. Using a moistened swab on the screen and other surfaces, the sample was placed in a culture medium for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.

The results showed the growth of bacterial colonies identified as gram-positive cocci and bacilli. Researchers noted that many of these microorganisms originate from human skin and are transferred to the device through hand contact. While most do not typically pose a risk, some could potentially cause infections under certain conditions.

Experts recommend incorporating device cleaning into daily routines, particularly upon arriving home, using a soft microfiber cloth to remove grease and fingerprints. To prevent hardware damage, users should follow manufacturer instructions, such as those from Apple, which suggest using a slightly damp, lint-free cloth and avoiding moisture in openings.
