Panama begins progressive school reopening after earthquake

Following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on October 9, Panama is beginning a progressive return to educational activities. The Ministry of Education (Meduca) announced that 770 schools across 12 regions will resume in-person classes on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. This reopening follows structural inspections to ensure student safety. Administrative staff are scheduled to return on October 19, followed by teachers on October 20.

While many regions are reopening, schools in the provinces of Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, and Veraguas will remain closed pending further technical evaluations. In response to the disaster, President José Raúl Mulino visited shelters in Veraguas and guaranteed the construction of new homes for affected families.

Separately, the University of Panama has scheduled a staggered return to in-person classes for various faculties starting Monday, October 19. Meanwhile, in La Chorrera, parents at the Guillermo Endara Galimany school have expressed concern regarding structural stability and are demanding more comprehensive technical reports following the seismic event.
