Universidad de Sonora union demands compliance with labor ruling

Members of the Sindicato Independiente de la Universidad de Sonora (SIUS) staged protests, including blocking access to the university rectorate, to demand compliance with a 2023 labor court ruling. The union, led by Dorotea Rascón Gámez, alleges that university authorities have failed to respect judicial resolutions regarding the distribution of benefits and the allocation of job positions.

Specifically, the union claims that according to a ruling from the First Labor Tribunal, SIUS is entitled to 8.56 percent of certain benefits established in the collective bargaining agreement, a portion they say has not been delivered. Rascón noted that because the union represents a minority of approximately 8 percent of the workforce, they lack the legal standing to call a strike, prompting the use of blockades instead.

Following a meeting at the Government Palace with State Secretary of Government Adolfo Salazar Razo and Rector Dena Camarena Gómez, an agreement was reached. The university rectorate has been given a one-week deadline to resolve the issues raised in the judicial sentence. The union has warned of further actions, including blocking vehicle access to the campus, if the demands are not met.
