Universidad Nacional de la Educación project presented in San José

The project to create the Universidad Nacional de la Educación (Uned) was presented in San José de Mayo. The proposed institution aims to strengthen professional development and the teaching career, playing a key role within the National Education System and the National Tertiary Education System.

The bill, currently under parliamentary review, establishes that Uned will focus on university-level training for education professionals through teaching, research, and extension functions. Officials noted that the university is designed to be highly decentralized, with a goal of reaching all territories. Currently, teacher training operates across 33 locations in various departments, with 60% of students residing in the interior of the country.

The presentation included Minister of Education and Culture José Carlos Mahía, Intendente Ana Bentaberri, and National Director of Education Gabriel Quirici. Because the project requires a special majority of two-thirds in both chambers of Parliament, officials emphasized the need for a broad national agreement to ensure its passage.
