Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) installs first room‑temperature quantum computer

The Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) has acquired a SPINQ Triangulum II quantum computer with three qubits. The device uses nuclear magnetic resonance technology and can operate at ambient temperature, eliminating the need for ultra‑cold cooling systems. It will be installed in the Faculty of Informatics and made available remotely for undergraduate, graduate and research projects.

With this acquisition, UNLP joins a small group of public universities in Latin America that own quantum‑computing infrastructure. The university hopes the system will support studies in cryptography, molecular simulation, logistics optimisation, climate modelling and advanced artificial‑intelligence research. The investment comes amid broader cuts to scientific funding in Argentina, highlighting a strategic move to bolster domestic innovation capabilities.
