Universidad Veracruzana researchers study natural compounds for disease treatment

Researchers at the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) are developing experimental models to study human diseases and evaluate potential treatments derived from natural compounds. The academic group, focused on the Biology, Chemistry, and Molecular Functionality of Plant Metabolites, is conducting research in Xalapa to analyze biological responses to various experimental treatments.

By using murine models, the team has successfully reproduced conditions such as epileptic states, hemolytic anemia, drug-induced anemia, and metabolic syndrome. These models allow scientists to evaluate compounds before considering clinical applications. Preliminary results indicate that certain supplements can mitigate or reverse the effects of these diseases and liver damage.

Specific studies include the evaluation of immunomodulators such as Astragalus membranaceus and Withania somnifera (ashwagandha) in models of aplastic anemia, where favorable biological effects were observed.
