Universidade da Coruña faces financial concerns, Galician education minister calls for responsible fund management

Román Rodríguez, the Galician regional minister of Education, Science, Universities and Vocational Training, said the financial situation of the Universidade da Coruña (UDC) is "concerning" and urged the institution to adopt "reasonable" and transparent management of public funds to achieve financial equilibrium.

He cited an audit by the university's Social Council that showed worrying figures for the 2024 budget liquidation. While the university reported a treasury balance of €12.3 million and savings of about €2 million through a 30 % cut in spending, it warned that the current financing plan cannot cover salary increases mandated by the state and other compensation obligations. Rodríguez highlighted that the Xunta de Galicia has a university financing plan signed with the three rectors, providing certainty for budgeting, and urged the UDC to implement measures that ensure rigorous stewardship of public resources.

The minister emphasized that the regional government remains loyal to the university but cannot be complicit in mismanagement, stressing the need for a structural financing solution.
