Universidade Federal de Pelotas investigates professor for alleged racial slur

The Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel) in Brazil is conducting an internal investigation following allegations of racial injury by a professor. The incident reportedly involved an email sent on August 28 to two Black staff members in the laboratory materials procurement sector. According to reports, the professor used a racist expression, specifically referring to the department as ‘the senzala crew’ (turma da senzala).

The university has activated its ‘Bem Viver’ policy for the prevention and combat of violence, mobilizing the Pro-Rectory of Affirmative Action and Equity (Proafe) to provide support and manage the case. While the university has maintained confidentiality regarding specific administrative measures, it stated that it does not tolerate racist practices.

On the legal front, the victims filed police reports with the Civil Police. Due to the involvement of employees at a federal institution, the case is expected to be transferred to the Federal Police for further investigation.
