Universidade Politécnica da Guarda files three patents in digital and health sectors

The Polytechnic University of Guarda (UPG) has submitted three patent applications in the fields of digital technology and health to the National Institute of Industrial Property. The filings, made between June and July 2026, include two national patents and one international patent.

The innovations include a digital manufacturing system and a hybrid additive and subtractive 3D printing system, both developed by researcher Rui Pires. Additionally, researchers Raquel Lima and Luís Miguel Condeço developed an integrated device for the intravenous infusion of blood or blood products.

University Rector Joaquim Brigas stated that these patents represent a milestone in establishing UPG as a reference polytechnic university that connects scientific knowledge with industry and society. The move follows the launch of an executive program in Innovation and Intellectual Property designed to help researchers and businesses protect their intellectual assets.
