Columbus Crew defeats Pumas in Leagues Cup penalty shootout
Columbus Crew defeated Pumas in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw during the Leagues Cup 2026. The victory earns the Crew an additional point, bringing their tournament total to eight as they seek a spot in the quarterfinals.
Tarun Karumanchi opened the scoring for Columbus in the 9th minute with a header. Pumas equalized just before halftime when Álvaro Angulo scored a volley off a cross from Uriel Antuna. The match grew tense in the second half after Pumas' Luciano Herrera received a straight red card in the 72nd minute for an off-the-ball foul.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Pumas goalkeeper Keylor Navas successfully converted the opening kick and saved one shot. However, Rodrigo López and Nathan Silva failed their attempts, resulting in a 3-2 shootout win for Columbus.
