Indonesia targets AI as economic engine with potential Rp 7,221 trillion value

The Indonesian government is positioning artificial intelligence (AI) as a primary driver for national economic growth. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia's AI economy could reach between US$ 360 billion and US$ 400 billion by 2030.

To achieve this, the government is focusing on several strategic pillars, including increasing productivity, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). During the Bali Tech Week 2026, officials emphasized that AI should serve as a catalyst for real-world implementation rather than just theoretical development.

Complementing these economic goals, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is working to strengthen digital sovereignty. Key initiatives include expanding data center infrastructure to eastern Indonesia, specifically targeting regions like Kupang and Bitung, and establishing a national digital infrastructure map. The government is also preparing regulations regarding subsea cables and data centers to support this digital expansion.
