Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta launches bioadsorbent workshop to cut poultry ammonia emissions

On 21 April 2026, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) held a community workshop in Ngentakrejo, Lendah, Kulonprogo Regency. Led by Dr Laila Katriani, the event introduced a low‑cost bioadsorbent made from the fruit of Averrhoa bilimbi (belimbing wuluh) aimed at reducing ammonia gas emissions from chicken‑farm waste.

The workshop engaged 42 local poultry farmers, providing hands‑on training and direct technical assistance. Organisers highlighted the project’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), emphasizing collaboration between the university, government agencies, funding bodies and the farming community to deliver an environmentally friendly solution.

Participants were encouraged to adopt the bioadsorbent technology to improve air quality in poultry houses, mitigate odor problems and support responsible production practices in the region’s dominant livestock sector.
