Universitas Padjadjaran researchers convert fish scales into battery material
Researchers from Universitas Padjadjaran have successfully converted tilapia fish scale waste into hard carbon to serve as an alternative anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The innovation aims to address the accumulation of fishery waste while seeking renewable energy storage materials to replace lithium.
The research team utilized the natural nitrogen content in the collagen of tilapia scales through an in-situ self-doping nitrogen process, eliminating the need for external chemical doping agents. Through pyrolysis at temperatures of 600°C, 700°C, and 800°C, the team identified the 800°C sample (HC-800) as having the most promising structural performance and reversibility for sodium-ion battery development.
