Universitat Jaume I develops new sustainable mobility plan

Universitat Jaume I (UJI) is developing a new Sustainable Mobility Plan to reduce emissions and improve transportation for its community of over 16,000 students and staff. The initiative aims to adapt to recent regulatory changes, such as the Sustainable Mobility Law, while addressing the specific commuting needs of the campus.

As part of this effort, the Generalitat is promoting carpooling models to complement existing public transport. Manuel Ríos, Director General of Transport and Logistics, suggested that UJI could become a benchmark for university carpooling in Castellón, particularly for students traveling from municipalities without direct or well-timed public transit connections. The goal is to integrate different transport modes to ensure efficiency when public schedules do not align with academic activities.

The new plan will involve a diagnostic phase to analyze current mobility habits and demand through participatory processes. This follows previous sustainability efforts at UJI, including energy efficiency improvements and the installation of solar panels on campus buildings.
