Universitat Oberta de Catalunya launches Authory.tech to detect AI-generated schoolwork
The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) has introduced Authory.tech, a new tool designed to help educators verify the authorship of academic work and detect content generated by artificial intelligence.
Unlike traditional AI detectors, which teachers have found to be largely ineffective, Authory.tech monitors the actual writing process. It tracks metrics such as writing speed, the time taken to complete a task, the insertion of copied text, and the use of vocabulary that is atypical for a student's academic level. The platform then provides visualizations and metrics to assist instructors in understanding student patterns.
Recent research conducted by the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja (UNIR), the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV-EHU), and the Universitat de València shows that 64.4% of students aged 11 to 14 in Spain use AI tools, with 70% of those using them for academic purposes, such as summarizing information or resolving doubts. Additionally, a report from The Economist noted that 15% of high school students in the United States admit to using AI to complete entire assignments.
