Universiti Malaya launches student residence project

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has launched the Universiti Malaya (UM) Student Residence Project, an initiative designed to address housing shortages for university students. The project aims to provide accommodation for up to 40,000 students through a two-phase development.

Phase one, which covers 10,000 places, is scheduled for completion by 2030 or 2031. Phase two will add an additional 30,000 places, with an expected completion date in 2032. The development will span a site of approximately 10.3 acres.

UM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Datuk Seri Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman stated that the project is a response to the challenges students face, including long commutes and high rental costs outside of campus. The university intends to keep residence rates at reasonable levels to ensure the housing remains accessible and helps alleviate the financial burden on students.
