Universiti Malaya student faces no disciplinary action after forum comments
Universiti Malaya (UM) Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Seri Prof Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman, has confirmed that no disciplinary action will be taken against a student following her recent comments during an iFuture session. The student, Ummi Umairah Bakhit, drew public attention after raising questions regarding corruption and the Lembaga Tabung Haji scandal during a forum.
Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil stated that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is taking action regarding online threats and cyberbullying directed at the student. Fahmi emphasized that while individuals may disagree with her views, the right to express opinions within legal boundaries must be respected, particularly when addressing issues of corruption and kleptocracy.
The university maintains that differing viewpoints are part of an intellectual culture and that students should be provided with space to be heard. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications has advised victims of cyberbullying to report incidents to the police and MCMC to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
