Universities address AI integration and assessment challenges
Higher education institutions are navigating the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, focusing on both responsible implementation and the evolution of academic assessment. At the “Agentic AI and the Student Experience” conference, Arizona State University President Michael Crow highlighted that students are adopting AI tools faster than institutions can provide official resources. Crow emphasized that the goal of AI in education should be to enhance learning outcomes and public benefit, such as assisting neurodivergent learners and streamlining university bureaucracy.
Concurrently, educators are debating how to move away from the “cat-and-mouse game” of AI detection in grading. Proposed strategies include decoupling homework from grades to allow for low-stakes practice and shifting a significant portion of assessments to in-class, proctored environments. This approach aims to align evaluations with higher-order thinking and real-time demonstration of knowledge, rather than focusing on procedural recall or policing AI misuse.
