Universities adopt diverse strategies for AI integration in classrooms

Universities are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their curricula, though approaches to implementation vary by institution and academic discipline.

At Washington University in St. Louis, the AI Curriculum Corps provides a summer program for faculty to examine how AI can be used to enhance or critically evaluate student learning. Anna Cunningham, assistant director of teaching innovation, emphasizes that effective pedagogy remains the priority, suggesting that faculty must first define clear learning objectives before determining how AI fits into specific assignments.

MacEwan University in Canada is also developing frameworks for AI use, allowing individual programs to decide how to incorporate the technology. The university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning offers instructors several options for handling generative tools in assessments, ranging from full permission to total prohibition. While some departments, such as communication studies, encourage early adoption to assist with research and writing, others focus on teaching the ethical implications and limitations of the technology. In nursing, AI is being utilized through specialized tools like artificial patient simulators to help students practice clinical skills.
